Kia Ora & Welcome to the West Coast
Nau mai, haere mai ki te West Coast.
Wild, rugged and beautiful, the South Island’s West Coast is New Zealand as it used to be – and in our eyes, it’s an absolute must-see!
Known for its incredibly high rainfall and lush rainforest, this is a gorgeous part of the country. Don’t let the rain put you off though – if anything, this region is even better in the rain! It’s at that time that the trees glisten and the waterfalls appear.
The main towns on the West Coast are Westport, Greymouth and Hokitika. Each are worth visiting (with Hokitika being a real highlight), but we really suggest you spend your time visiting the smaller towns and those all-important spots in the middle of nowhere.
Be sure to include a visit to Franz Jospef and Fox (home to our incredible glaciers), Punakaiki (famous for its amazing pancake-like rock formations) and Charleston (where you can head out Black Water Rafting.)
Whether you drive your way to the coast, catch the TranzAlpine or join a tour, make sure you include a number of stops on your New Zealand itinerary.
