Mighty Mt Cook & Tekapo
One of the most memorable parts of Canterbury, Mt Cook and neighbouring Tekapo are drop-dead beautiful.
Aoraki Mt Cook is the highest mountain in New Zealand (reaching 3,724 metres/12,218 feet) and is popular amongst both tourists and mountain climbers. This giant sits within the Southern Alps, providing an incredible backdrop for trampers and climbers.
Not far from Mt Cook, you’ll also find Tekapo. Don’t overlook this little lakeside town – though it is sleepy, it is one of the most stunning towns in Aotearoa!
There you’ll find the infamous Church of the Good Shepherd and popular hot pools, all in front of Lake Tekapo.
When the sun goes down, Tekapo gets even better (though that’s hard to believe) thanks to it’s dark sky. The area that surrounds Tekpo is part of a dark sky reserve, which means that visitors have unparalleled opportunities to stargaze and take clear astro photos.
